RacingOur racing programme has been developed over the last ten years. Adopting the ‘broad brush’ approach, we hold time trials, criteriums, road races and occasional novelty events.

The growth in membership and the breadth of standards sees us running competition in four grades – A,B,C and D. The pointscore system applies and champions in each grade are declared at our Annual Club Dinner (hopefully before the alcohol runs out).

Time Trials - Our shorter Time Trails are run on a relatively flat circuit close to the city (Heffron Park, Maroubra) with the standard distances 4km (2 laps), 8km (4 laps) and 12km (6 laps). Recently we’ve introduced a more arduous 25km course with hills, fast descents and long flats (Calga). The TTs are well supported by members, with upwards of 50% participation, everyone keen to secure points and/or establish PBs. Nowhere to hide, so the results are always honest. The Sydney Cycling Club is one of the only Sydney clubs to run regular TTs. UCI equipment rules apply, so aero bars, skinsuits, monocoques, deep section wheels etc are allowed and there’s no shortage of these high tech. aids.

Criteriums - There are a number of criteriums scheduled per year at Heffron Park, Maroubra. These events are short, usually 10 laps (20km) and points are awarded by grade, counting towards the Criterium Championship as well as the Club Championship.

Road Races - The course we’ve adopted is at Lansdowne Park, approx 26kms west of the CBD. A 2 km circuit, it contains a little of everything; some testing hills, a couple of exhilarating descents and some tight corners. The events are run on a graded basis and big points are always on offer.

Speciality Events - These include the Kilometre Time Trial, the Hill Climb and the Criterium Series (see above).

Open Races - The past two years have seen higher and higher numbers of club members competing in NSW and national open racing. The club and our sponsors gets right behind racing members so there's a lot of support for those who give it a go and chase after their personal racing goals during the season. We have Sydney Cycling Club riders competing in country and metro open races, on the track, and at State and Australian champs at all levels. Pick your own torture!

If you want to compete in Open Races conducted by the State's governing body, Cycling New South Wales (CNSW), then you must have either applied for or have a CNSW Full Racing Licence, or have a CNSW Non Competitor Licence and apply for a single day or multi day Race Permit. You will also need to enter via Cycling NSW ‘online entry system’, prior to the closing date for the event you wish to enter, as advertised in the CNSW Race Program Booklet or their website program. Some entry fees (into Open events) are reimbursed by the club and any prize money won throughout the season is doubled. So as you can see we and our sponsors are serious about getting you out there.
